Washington Elementary can seem to be a familiar place to all students who enter through the front doors.  This is partly because of the efforts of the dedicated staff who believe that all students can achieve.  But another reason why so many students feel at home in our building is because of the efforts of the community of Junction City and historical Fort Riley.

Picture of Washington Elementary School as it is seen from Washington Street.

Placed at two of the major entryways to Fort Riley, Washington Elementary is the closest elementary school to the fort.  Any traveler could easily see the similarity between the limestone on our building and the structures on post.  If you take a close look, you will also see similarities inside of our school.

Just as the military believes in developing the character of their soldiers, the staff of Washington Elementary believes in developing the character of their students.  Our staff wants to enable students to make good decisions in all aspects of their lives, which is why we expose them to the Life Skills.  There are fifteen Life Skills which are posted throughout the school as a reminder to use them in our everyday lives.

Our staff and students are extremely appreciative to the community for their involvement in the education of these young citizens.  Recently, the students showed just how thankful they were.  During the 2005 Red Ribbon Week, students collected over 1,300 cans of food which were donated to a local food bank.  Students also get to witness the Life Skill of responsibility, as Washington Elementary serves as a polling place in Geary County.

Whether you are a long time resident of Geary County or a new visitor, everyone can appreciate the rich diversity and cultures found at Washington Elementary.  Our community, the staff, and our student’s families foster a love of learning and give our students the tools to be successful in all that they do.
